With any weight loss journey, getting into fitness in order to shed pounds can be daunting. But luckily there are ways to go about it which means people don’t have to go it alone and can make losing weight more enjoyable.
Dean Zweck, Product Development Manager at Total Fitness, revealed fitness should be considered “a form of celebration”.
Physical activity affects people’s physical, mental and social well-being in many ways and it’s important for them to ensure they are taking part in regular activity.
Current guidelines state adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week and two days of muscle-strengthening activity.
But while 150 minutes each week sounds like a lot, people don’t have to do it all at once.
Dean suggested a few things people can do if they’re just starting out or if they’ve hit a wall with their weight loss and fitness.

He said: “Whether you believe it or not, fitness unites us and brings people and communities together.
“And while our goals and motivations to exercise may differ, everyone is here to reap the many benefits it has to offer, whether that be to build muscle, tone up, or a chance to socialise.”
With so many different ways of working out, it can put people off, leaving them feeling embarrassed or intimidated.
Dean said it’s “sometimes easier to stick to what you know”, but with so much readily available in today’s fast-paced environment, there is usually something for everyone.
He offered five exercise suggestions to help people across the nation mix up their fitness routines and try something new to boost their weight loss and reach their goals.

Taking part in a weekly exercise class can be a good way to boost motivation and add some variety to people’s training programmes.
Dean suggested attending a fitness class that a person hasn’t tried before, explaining: “There are so many out there including spin, yoga and body tone,” he said.
For weight loss, focus on classes that promote fat burning and toning. According to Fit Athletic, the “best” classes that will kick-start weight loss results and boost people’s fitness include:Losing weight can be a lonely journey but doing it alongside like-minded people can make it more enjoyable.
Some studies have shown that working out and dieting with a friend is the “key” to keeping weight off.
Dean agreed, saying: “Encourage one of your friends to come and do a workout with you if you usually exercise alone or struggle to exercise at all, as a partner can always help to keep you motivated.”
It can be embarrassing to ask for help at the best of times and in a gym environment, this can lead to intimidation when a person is unsure about working the equipment or how to do a certain exercise properly.
Personal trainers help people to better their life goals as they keep their clients safe in the gym and hold them accountable.
Often considered an “investment in yourself”, Dean encouraged people to ask for advice.
He said: “Speak to a trainer at your gym and ask for advice on how to use a piece of equipment you haven’t tried before but have always wanted to.”This can always be daunting at first but could also be a good way to achieve set fitness and weight loss goals.
“Make the most of the facilities you have in your local community and enjoy exercising on the most active day of the year,” Dean said.
“Break down those barriers to something you’ve always wanted to try!”
He recommended utilising local gym swimming pools, as it is considered one of the “most effective” cardio methods to lose weight, including burning belly fat.
Research has found that swimming at a moderate pace for 30 minutes burns around 250 calories.
In order to burn as much fat as possible, people are advised to maintain their heart rate in the fat-burning zone.
This depends on the individual – a person’s fat-burning heart rate is about 70 percent of their maximum heart rate, which is found by subtracting their age from 220.
And Dean is all for swimming to keep people fit, urging: “Go for a swim if you’re not a regular swimmer as there are so many benefits to this form of exercise.”
